The Game Developers Conference (GDC) annual State of the Industry Survey provides a snapshot of the games industry every year for game developers and game publishers. The results illustrate the year’s biggest trends including the rise of console development, as well as digital and microtransaction sales dominating profits, to offer a glimpse into the future landscape of the games industry.
The GDC marketing team polled over 2,000 North American game developers who attended the Game Developers Conference 2014 in San Francisco.
A snapshot of noteworthy survey results:
- Looking ahead, 29% of developers surveyed expect their next game to be on a PlayStation 4, while 24% on Xbox One, compared to 20% and 17% respectively when asked in previous year
- PC and mobile still reign supreme in terms of platform popularity; up 3% from last year, 56% said their current game will be released on PC and 50% said their current project will release on smartphones or tablets.
- eSports is here to stay according to 79% who said the perceive eSports to be a long-term, sustainable business
- Digital Sales and Microtransactions trump retail when it comes to profits
